The Team
Dr Jim Bullock
Dr Jim Bullock has been CEO of Intelligent Formulation Ltd since January 2010, before which he spent five years heading the development and regulatory function for BASF’s global biocides business based in Nottingham.
After a D.Phil in Materials Science from Oxford, Jim led R&D projects on engineered microcrystals in imaging systems at Ilford Ltd. He then joined ICI (later Zeneca) Specialties in 1989 where he led R&D activities and teams working on crystal engineering and the physical, formulation and synthetic chemistry of dyes.
Jim also spent five years at BASF in Germany, heading formulation development for dye and pigment preparations before switching to the biocides business where he was responsible for global marketing and strategy. Jim also served for several years on the board of Agion Technologies, a specialist provider of antimicrobial materials based near Boston, USA.
Dr David Calvert
Dr David Calvert, Head of Business Development, has a wealth of experience both in formulation and more recently in successfully bridging the gap between academic research and commercial success.
He started at Dow Chemical’s European Headquarters in Switzerland where he was project leader in technical service and development of aqueous emulsion polymers for seven years.
His time at Biocode as Technical Manager involved leading a group commercialising anti-counterfeiting compounds. His time at Holliday Pigments continued the formulation theme with developments for coatings, thermoplastics and construction products involving global technical presentations. During that time he made numerous presentations about life cycle analysis and this environmental element was continued when he led the Environmental Technologies Centre of Industrial Collaboration (ETCIC) at the University of Hull. He led the development of the first accredited REACH training course and also formed a local environmental network to help companies with resource efficiency and carbon management.
Mark Hopkins
Mark Hopkins, Business Development Manager, has worked for a number of companies operating in the chemical industry from large scale intermediate producers to small research based organisations, in sectors such as agrochemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, personal care and others.
Following the requirement to wear a white coat for the last year of his degree course, the decision was made to pursue a career within the commercial arena of the chemical industry!
Over the last 27 years or so Mark has worked for a number of companies operating in the chemical industry from large scale intermediate producers to small research based organisations. These have been involved in the agrochemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, personal care and other sectors of the industry.
Within all of these companies and sectors formulation has played a large part in the products and services being sold, from optical brightening agents in detergent formulations through agrochemical formulations and even with one company being part of a ‘cosmetic formulation manufacturing‘ team. The latter role at one stage involved the manufacture of spray tan formulations so lack of efficient personal protective equipment could've led to some embarrassment!
Mark looks forward to bringing my experience and contacts into play within his new role at Intelligent Formulation as the company moves forward over the next years.
Dr Nicholas Marchetti
Dr Nicholas Marchetti, Projects Manager, is an experienced innovation specialist and project manager. Trained as a geneticist and reproductive biologist, Nicholas subsequently moved into business support for research intensive companies.
He was appointed National Contact Point for the European Union’s Framework Programme for Research and Development. He then moved to Yorkshire’s Regional Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward, where he was responsible for the Centres of Industrial Collaboration, as well as working on the development of the region’s innovation strategy. Building on this experience in the innovation support arena, Nicholas moved back into the commercial world, working as an innovation consultant for a business support SME, where he also managed the region’s Enterprise Europe Network project.
